• Former Lakers’ head coach Byron Scott praised Rob Pelinka
• Scott recognized how the Lakers have been reshaped over the summer by Pelinka
• The former coach thinks Pelinka has an early lead in the Executive of the Year conversation
The Lakers have had one of the best offseasons in the entire league, making a lot of crucial signings that’ll further bolster their depth and ability to challenge for a title next season. GM Rob Pelinka’s moves have prompted former Lakers’ head coach Byron Scott to say that Pelinka is already leading the Executive of the Year race.
“I love what they did in the offseason. You gotta give Rob Pelinka a lot of credit. I think right now he’s the Executive of the Year for what he was able to bring to the table… The biggest surprise to me was getting Gabe Vincent away from Miami. I thought that he was going to stay in Miami because the guy proved that he could play this game.”
The Lakers have kept a lot of roster flexibility open in years past, but this season they committed to signing good players to bolster their bench instead of remaining top-heavy. It’s all a question of whether it can come together on the court to help the Lakers compete for a championship.
The Lakers Offseason Summary
The Lakers committed to the core that made the Western Conference Finals by re-signing Austin Reaves, Rui Hachimura, and D’Angelo Russell, while also giving Anthony Davis a massive contract extension.
They signed free agents Taurean Prince, Gabe Vincent, Jaxson Hayes, and Cam Reddish as veterans while also drafting Jalen Hood-Schifino and Maxwell Lewis.
LeBron James could be a free agent next summer, but it’s unlikely he will sign an extension in the middle of the season. The Lakers have a deep squad that can compete for a championship right now, but Pelinka can’t be crowned anything until we see results on the court.
