• Luka Doncic has made a commitment to his body this summer
• The Mavericks star has struggled with staying in shape during summer and the season
• His trainer claims Doncic has worked on slimming down without taking a lot of time off this offseason
Luka Doncic has received criticism from fans, players, and the media for his poor habits that tend to take him out of shape as the season progresses. That may not be a problem next season, as Doncic’s trainer, Anže Maček, claims Luka is more motivated than ever to stay in shape for Slovenia as well as the Mavericks.
(translated from Slovenian)
“I can confirm that Luka was extremely motivated (after last season). He wanted to do something. The unfolding of the NBA season fueled him. There were rare days when he did not train. And even then only because he had other obligations waiting for him. He is the best prepared he has ever been. In the USA, he will have to make sure that there are no drops in physical fitness. Therefore, a lot of work awaits him even after the end of the national team campaign. He will have to maintain the way of life he built in Slovenia.”
Maček also explained how his failures in Dallas last season led to his change in attitude towards being in shape.
“Shortly after his arrival from Dallas, we had an open conversation. We realized that the time we have at our disposal is a great advantage. I told him that he can silence all negative and malicious comments for good this summer. He quickly told me that it doesn’t even touch him.”
Even while being out of shape, Doncic averaged a whopping 32.4 points, 8.6 rebounds, and 8.0 assists last season. He did come into the season in shape after playing for Slovenia, but it’s clear he couldn’t sustain it over the season with his heavy workload for the Mavs.
Luka Doncic Has Help Around Him
Doncic was single-handedly keeping the team in the mix for a top-four seed by the time February 2023 rolled around. Unfortunately, Doncic’s poor physical; condition and piling injuries meant he was not the same player after the trade deadline who was dropping 60-21-10 on teams.
The team acquired Kyrie Irving to lighten the offensive load, but it was too late in the season for a team with one of the worst defenses in the NBA to find chemistry in time to remain competitive.
With Irving under a long-term contract and really good free agency moves like signing Grant Williams, the Mavericks are looking much better already. If Doncic can commit to keeping his body healthy for the entire season, the Mavs may return to the form we saw them show in 2022.
