  • Kyrie Irving and Klay Thompson have been two of the best guards in the league in the last decade
  • Kyrie and Klay have battled it out in the NBA Finals as well
  • NBA fans debated which of the two has had the better career

When talking about the last decade or so of NBA basketball, Kyrie Irving and Klay Thompson are two names that will certainly come up. Both Kyrie and Klay entered the league in 2011, with the former being the first pick of the draft while the latter was the 11th pick.

The two of them have certainly made their mark on the league by delivering some big performances in the biggest moments. The careers of Kyrie and Klay, however, have panned out very differently, and NBA fans on Twitter recently debated on which of the two has had the better one.

A fan went with Thompson, and he doesn’t believe it’s even close.

One fan chose Klay as he has gotten paid, played with the best team ever, and won four rings.

Klay because he got paid, played with the best team ever assembled and won 4 rings

Kyrie would have won at least six rings if he played with Stephen Curry, a fan claimed.

If kyrie played with steph his whole career he'd have 6 rings minimum

A fan says Kyrie is more talented but Klay has the better resume.

Talent — Kyrie
Resume — Klay

One fan claims he would take Klay’s career 10/10 times.

I would take Klay’s career 10/10 times…

Let’s compare Kyrie Irving and Klay Thompson’s careers:

Kyrie Irving’s career stats: 23.4 points, 3.9 rebounds, 5.7 assists, 1.3 steals, and 0.4 blocks per game

Klay Thompson’s career stats: 19.8 points, 3.5 rebounds, 2.3 assists, 0.9 steals, and 0.5 blocks per game

Kyrie Irving’s accomplishments: 1x NBA Champion, 8x All-Star, 1x All-NBA Second Team, 2x All-NBA Third Team, Rookie of the Year

Klay Thompson’s accomplishments: 4x NBA Champion, 5x All-Star, 2x All-NBA Third Team, 1x All-Defensive Third Team

If you go by the rings, the 33-year-old Thompson has easily had a better career than the 31-year-old Irving. The argument raised by one fan on Klay having the advantage of Stephen Curry being his teammate doesn’t really apply, as Kyrie had LeBron James. Had Irving not wanted to part ways with LeBron when they were teammates on the Cleveland Cavaliers, he could have won more titles.

Kyrie is clearly the more talented player, but the question isn’t about talent. If we do look at talent, Kyrie is easily the more gifted offensive player, but his advantage on that end gets negated to an extent by the fact that Klay is a far better defender. Thompson only has one All-Defensive team selection to show for it, but Irving has never even come close to that. All in all, it’s hard to not go for Klay here.
