D’Angelo Russell came into the NBA as a highly touted prospect, being drafted No. 2 overall in the 2015 NBA Draft. Unfortunately, his career hasn’t panned out into him becoming a perennial All-Star.
Russell is a very good starter in the NBA but hasn’t been able to solidify a position in any of the franchises he’s been on, getting traded back to the Lakers in February. He was on Patrick Beverley’s podcast and discussed how he can feel when he’s about to be traded.
“I felt that they couldn’t pay me, so I knew I was out… I’ve been traded so many times I can feel it. I can walk into the facility and see how the janitor looked at me different and he probably overheard a conversation. I’m feeling all that. What Kendrick say? ‘I can feel you’re energy from two planets away’.”
D’Angelo Russell did ink some short-term security by signing a new contract with the Lakers, but he has to be careful. The Lakers could very well trade him before the 2024 trade deadline, so he’ll be playing to keep himself away from a fifth trade.
He averaged 17.4 points, 2.9 rebounds, and 6.1 assists in 17 appearances with the Lakers in the regular season.
D’Angelo Russell Has Been Traded Four Times In His Career
D’Angelo Russell’s trade history begins with the team he’s currently on, the Lakers. After drafting him and having high hopes for him, they traded him to the Brooklyn Nets in 2017 for Brook Lopez and the draft rights to Kyle Kuzma.
He broke out as an All-Star in the 2018-19 season with the Nets but would be moved to the Golden State Warriors in the offseason as part of a sign-and-trade for Kevin Durant.
The Warriors would move on from D’Lo in half a season, sending him to the Minnesota Timberwolves for Andrew Wiggins and the draft rights to Jonathan Kuminga in February 2020.
He had a solid two-season stint with the Wolves, but the team decided to get value out of him before letting him walk in free agency by sending him to the Lakers. Now, the Lakers have re-signed him, but if he disappoints again on the court, he could be shipped out by February 2024 for a fifth trade.
