- The Dallas Mavericks helped former player Dorian Finney-Smith secure parole from prison for his father
- His father, Elbert Smith, has spent over 28 years in prison as an accessory to a 1985 murder
- Owner Mark Cuban and GM Nico Harrison were both directly involved in making this happen
NBA players and organizations have the same relationship as any employer and their employees, but at times it goes deeper than that. And the Dallas Mavericks have proved this by helping out their former player Dorian Finney-Smith in a big way.
The Mavericks traded Dorian Finney-Smith to the Brooklyn Nets as part of the package for Kyrie Irving. But even after his departure, they have helped him get his father Elbert Smith paroled from prison.
Dorian Finney-Smith’s father had served 28 years in prison as an accessory to murder and was granted conditional freedom by the Virginia Parole Board.
According to the Dallas Morning News, the Mavericks played a huge role in securing this, with the report stating, “Mavericks governor Mark Cuban, general manager Nico Harrison, and other franchise leaders all provided written testimonials during Smith’s hearing, all vouching for Finney-Smith’s character.”
GM Nico Harrison and Mark Cuban Companies Chief of Staff Jason Lutin joined Dorian Finney-Smith for the hearing, while his former head coach Rick Carlisle was present in a virtual capacity.
Mark Cuban shared his thoughts on the matter, too, saying, “I’m just happy we could help. We are indescribably appreciative of Mr. Kilgore and glad for Doe Doe (Finney-Smith’s nickname) and his dad. Doe is a special guy. He deserves this.”
Dorian Finney-Smith was with the Dallas Mavericks for 7 years, averaging 8.2 points and 4.5 rebounds per game during that time. He blossomed into a key defender for the team as well and was a key contributor to their Western Conference Finals run in 2022.
This is a move from the Dallas Mavericks organization that will not be unnoticed by various players around the league. Needing to consistently build a contending roster around Luka Doncic for the foreseeable future, the Mavericks could do with being a destination players want to get to.
Mark Cuban Has Helped Other NBA Players Like Dennis Rodman And Delonte West With Off-Court Issues
Mark Cuban may come in for criticism from time to time, but no one can dispute that he truly cares about players. He has been in regular contact with Delonte West while trying to help him, having picked him up from gas stations before and even offering money to cover his expenses so he could get better.
The billionaire also helped Dennis Rodman out by giving him $100,000 and letting him stay in his guest house once. The Dallas Mavericks have dealt with their fair share of organizational issues, but helping out Finney-Smith and his father this way can only be described as an extremely classy move by the leadership.
