Magic Johnson was one of the greatest players in the NBA during his career. But since retirement, Johnson has not stepped away from the sports world at all. He served briefly as the Los Angeles Lakers President of Basketball Operations and also acquired ownership stakes in teams like the LA Dodgers, LA Sparks, and LAFC.
Recently, Magic Johnson added to his ownership portfolio by becoming a part-owner of the Washington Commanders. Johnson is now a part-team owner in the NFL, MLB, WNBA, and MLS. Johnson spoke about the pride and excitement he felt about becoming an owner of the NFL, as a businessman and a fan of the sport.
“God is so good…I still can’t believe it! I am currently living in an answered prayer. Since beginning my journey as an athlete and now businessman and team owner, it’s all been a dream that has come full circle”.
“I grew up playing football as a kid, I’m a huge NFL fan, and I watch games every week. Now, I get to co-own a storied franchise, the Washington Commanders”.
This is truly the biggest achievement in my business career and a historic moment for the entire Black community. Talk about God’s perfect timing. This was the right organization for me to be a part of given it’s global appeal, history of winning, and the diverse fanbase and DMV…

Johnson is truly thrilled to now be an owner of one of the most successful leagues in the world. On top of that, this move only furthers his ambitions as a businessman, as it will give him the experience of navigating a whole new league and franchise that he may not have been initially familiar with.
Magic Johnson Has Had A Very Successful Post-NBA Career
Magic Johnson’s story is truly inspirational. Many fans thought his career was over after his HIV diagnosis. But he was able to overcome it and has become one of the biggest and most successful businessmen in the world today.
This is also Johnson’s first sports-based business venture outside of Los Angeles. As mentioned before, Johnson owns an ownership stake in several sports teams, all of which are based in Los Angeles. Now becoming a part-owner of the Commanders, Johnson has his first team outside of Washington.
Will Johnson eventually make his way to the NBA as an owner? He has played an executive role for the Lakers, but one has to imagine he might have his eyes set on owning an NBA franchise.
