Victor Wembanyama Is Working On Adding Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's Skyhook To His Arsenal
The 2023 No. 1 overall pick Victor Wembanyama will be under the microscope throughout the 2023-24 NBA season. The San Antonio Spurs rookie is expected to improve and ultimately add new skills to his arsenal.
Speaking of which, Victor Wembanyama recently revealed that he is learning Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's legendary skyhook.
"I've been working a little bit on my skyhook–you know, Kareem skyhook," Wembanyama added. "And hopefully, someday, it can be a weapon to add."
Being 7'5", Wembanyama has the physical tools to master the legendary shot. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar used it to score a lot of his 36,387 career points. Can Wembanyama become the next talented big man to make full use of the shot? We will find out when he pulls it off in games.
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Explained Why Players Do Not Use His Skyhook
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar retired from the NBA in 1989. Since then, fans have rarely seen any player use the legendary skyhook. But what's the reason behind it?
Well, the legendary NBA center explained that in an interview. He believes it's simply out of style.
"I don't know, it's not a hard shot to learn," Kareem said. "You can do the George Mikan Drill and that will give you all the fundamentals, give you the footwork. How to use either hand and how to use the backboard. It teaches you everything about using that shot. It's a great drill but there's not too many guys that are using it and they don't try to get the shots off in a game. So, it's kind of gone out of style and out of the game."
If Victor Wembanyama regularly uses the skyhook, he may bring it back to style. After all, Wembanyama is expected to become the face of the NBA, and if he uses it, it will encourage young athletes to do the same.
