Luka Doncic has already played in the NBA for five seasons while giving his heart and soul to the Dallas Mavericks. He also led the Mavericks to the 2022 Western Conference Finals.
The organization traded for Kyrie Irving in the middle of the 2022-23 NBA season, so many expected them to become a favorite to win it all. However, the Mavs ended up missing the play-in tournament. According to ESPN’s Kendra Andrews, Luka Doncic could test the waters if the Dallas Mavericks fail to maintain team morale this season.
“Luka Doncic,” Andrews wrote in a recent ESPN report. “He is six years in, he missed the playoffs last season, and the Mavs haven’t made any moves to drastically improve so far this offseason. Morale was so low by the end of last season — particularly in how the team decided to handle Doncic’s final game — that he could decide he wants to see what else is out there.”
The Dallas Mavericks were investigated by the NBA for sitting out Kyrie Irving and playing Luka Doncic in just the first quarter during their second-last game of the season vs. the Chicago Bulls. The Mavericks were accused of trying to tank.
It apparently didn’t sit well with Doncic, who wanted the team to compete until the final game. Hopefully, Doncic and the Mavs can move on from that incident. If not, fans may see Doncic on a new team after the 2023-24 season.
The Dallas Mavericks Re-Signed Kyrie Irving
After months of speculation, Kyrie Irving finally re-signed with the Dallas Mavericks. He inked a three-year deal worth $126 million.
Despite several rumors stating otherwise, Doncic reportedly pushed the Mavericks to re-sign Irving.
“Word that Doncic pushed for Irving’s return may indicate he’s coming around on the need to find harmony and the opportunity for each to enhance the other.”
The Mavericks finished the 2022-23 season as the 11th seed in the Western Conference with a 38-44 record. With Irving and Doncic back on the roster, the Mavs will hope to at least reach the Western Conference Finals in 2024.
