Celtics Are Reportedly Waiting For Free Agency To Slow Down Before Giving Jaylen Brown A Supermax Contract Extension

The Boston Celtics are in no rush to decide Jaylen Brown's future, waiting for free agency chaos to slow down before discussing terms.

Jaylen Brown of the Boston Celtics was widely expected to receive a supermax contract extension this summer. He was an All-Star and made All-NBA this season, making him an invaluable piece of the team’s success.

Jared Weiss of The Athletic revealed that Brown and Boston will be working on an extension during the Las Vegas Summer League during the weekend, as free agency starts to cool down.

“Discussions over a designated veteran extension for Brown are expected to pick up steam soon, as the negotiating parties head to Las Vegas Summer League. While several designated rookie extensions have been agreed upon since free agency opened, the Brown contract is more complicated. Sources with knowledge of the discussions told The Athletic that the delay is due to the flurry of free agency activity this past week.”

The 2023 offseason has seen some extremely lucrative contracts be signed. Whether it’s Fred VanVleet signing with the Rockets or Tyrese Haliburton and Anthony Edwards signing mega extensions with their franchises, a lot of money is floating around the league right now. The biggest contract is yet to be handed out still, so everyone will be waiting to see what happens with Brown.

JB averaged 26.6 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 3.5 assists last regular season but ended the season poorly, averaging just 19.0 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 3.4 assists against the Miami Heat in the Conference Finals.

Will The Celtics Have To Think Twice Before Giving This Contract?

The relationship between Brown and the Celtics has been a little tenuous last season, with rumors of him wanting to leave the team running rife. But the possibility of a five-year, $295 million extension may be too much for the team to commit given they could end up paying over $800 million in total salaries to Brown, Jayson Tatum, and later, Kristaps Porzingis.

The Celtics also need to be sure that Brown and Tatum can get over the hump as a duo. They’re a fantastic pairing, but could the Celtics use a big three of Tatum, Porzingis, and Damian Lillard more than Brown? These are questions the Celtics will be heavily pondering heading into their weekend meetings.
