All good things must come to an end and for Marcus Smart, his time with the Boston Celtics came to an end last month when he was traded to the Memphis Grizzlies.
Smart spent nine seasons with the Celtics during which he averaged 10.6 PPG, 3.5 RPG, 4.6 APG, 1.6 SPG, and 0.4 BPG. As he gets ready for the next chapter of his career, Smart revealed that not winning a title is his only regret from his time with the Celtics.
“Not actually getting us one, that’s probably my only regret,” he said, per Boston Globe. “I love the journey that I’ve been a part of with this organization, with this team. I couldn’t ask for more. The only thing I regret is we didn’t get [the championship] when we had our chance when I was here. But other than that I’ve enjoyed my run.
In Smart’s nine seasons with the Celtics, they lost in the Eastern Conference Finals four times and in the NBA Finals once, in 2022. They were a very good team for much of his time there but ultimately kept falling just short in their quest to win that title. It was what made the front office think it was time for a splash to get over the hump and Smart ended up being the casualty.
Marcus Smart Revealed The Celtics Had Told Him He Was Safe
It always tends to be a shock when a long-tenured player like Smart gets traded. It was even more so for him, as he revealed the Celtics had told him a week before that he was safe and that there were no trade talks involving him.
The reason Smart ended up being traded, was because of the Los Angeles Clippers. The Celtics initially had a three-team deal in place that would see them acquire Kristaps Porzingis from the Washington Wizards, with Malcolm Brogdon heading to the Clippers.
Health concerns surrounding Brogdon led to the Clippers pulling out though and in their desperation to land Porzingis, the Celtics shipped off Smart to the Grizzlies in a new three-team deal. Had the Clippers gone ahead with the initial trade, Smart would be a Celtic today.
