DeMar DeRozan and Paul George are inarguably two of the more prolific mid-range snipers in the modern-day NBA, and the duo named their all-time mid-range starting five.
“Point guard, I’ma go with CP. You gotta go with Mike; Jordan. I’ma put Kob, and I’ma leave me out; I don’t want to put myself in there. I’ll go with Kawhi, and I’ma go with LaMarcus Aldridge,” DeRozan told George during his appearance on Podcast P.
Calling the Bulls’ list solid, George went on to name his own mid-range specialists who would form his top five.
“At my point, I’ma go Andre Miller – he was tough, I mean back down; he was amazing. I got the same; I’ma go with Kob and MJ just because they kinda took that mid-range game to a whole new level. I gotta put Deebo in there. I’ma go with Big Fundamental; I’ma go with TD.”
Both Kobe and MJ were common features in both the lists, and it’s understandable as they are rightly players who took the mid-range game aspect to another level.
It’s also nice to see DeRozan be humble enough to leave himself out, but George knows greatness when he sees one, and he promptly added Deebo to his list.
The Mid-Range Game Still Holds Value In The NBA
While the modern-day NBA may see three-point shooting as the way forward, there is no doubt that mid-range shooting still holds value in the league.
Miami Heat coach Erik Spoelstra aptly explained it saying the shot is the perfect weapon to use when there are openings that teams can’t cover when they set defensive ploys for three-point shots and drives to the paint.
The likes of MJ, Kobe, and even DeRozan and George have used that opening to turn the tide of games their way. So it clearly is an art and one that’s effective.
