Of all the potential landing spots for Victor Wembanyama, the San Antonio Spurs were certainly the best one. He gets to play under Gregg Popovich and it was also revealed he would be mentored by Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili, and Tony Parker.
Not long after he was drafted, the Spurs also arranged a dinner for Wembanyama with Duncan, Ginobili, David Robinson, and Sean Elliot. The Frenchman’s maturity was on full display that night, as Elliot revealed the questions Wembanyama asked them.
“Questions about how to prepare your body, how to get rest,” Elliot said on The Dan Patrick Show. “What the travel schedule is like because you’re coming from playing 55-60 games to playing 82… He asked us all, ‘How can you get enough sleep on the road?’ What kind of young person asks that question? Most guys are like ‘Hey, what’s the best club to go to in Philly or New York?’ He’s asking how he can get rest on back-to-backs.”
(starts at 2:20 mark):
As Elliot says, most young players would ask questions like places to visit and hang out, but Wembanyama is just focused on basketball. He had stated previously that he has his goals in mind and nothing is going to distract him from them. He just seems like the perfect Spurs player and that maturity will serve him well.
Victor Wembanyama Called It One Of The Best Dinners Of His Life
While the Spurs legends were quite impressed by what they saw from Wembanyama, the man himself termed it one of the best dinners of his life. He stated he learned more about the NBA in those couple of hours than he had in his entire life.
The Frenchman also praised the Spurs legends by adding that they are kind and generous, as they genuinely wanted to share their experiences with him.
Parker wasn’t able to make it for this dinner but he did have a message for his fellow countryman, stating that it is his time now to bring a championship to the Spurs. Odds are he probably will do that at some point in his career.
