The NBA lost a legend to a tragic aviation accident after Kobe Bryant passed away in a helicopter crash in 2020. But years before that terrible day, something else could have gone wrong for another face of the league.

LeBron James, like many other stars, travels around the States and the world in a private plane. In 2011, when he was with the Miami Heat, he was returning from London with his friends when they avoided getting into a plane that could have potentially crashed.

Bleacher Report shared the story as shared by former pilot George Thomsen: “One of the worst incidents that Thomsen is alleging involved a Nov. 11 flight from Ohio to London with Agent Tederick Curvy, and James’ friends Ernest “Randy” Mims, Maverick Carter, and Richard Paul.

“When it was time to return to the United States, the private jet was grounded after Thomsen discovered a “major fuel leak” during the jet’s refueling, that spewed potentially explosive fuel under the aircraft’s right wing.”

The plane was run by Crystal Air Aviation, whose own employee, George Thomsen, revealed the information after he quit following this incident. LeBron James and his crew were tipped off and chose to take another flight home while the plane remained in England.

According to Thomsen, the leak in the plane could have caused it to literally blow up. If that had happened in the air, then it could have become a massive disaster. Thomsen’s intervention ensured that the King didn’t end up tragically losing his life.

LeBron James Took His Career To The Next Level After 2011

There are many things in this world more important than basketball. And a story like this shows how great it is that LeBron James was fine and able to enjoy his life with his family just fine. But even when it comes to basketball, he only went to another level after 2011.

Since that year, James has won four NBA championships, four Finals MVPs, and two MVP awards. This isn’t all, he brought a championship back to his first team, the Cleveland Cavaliers, in what was an incredible moment in NBA history. He also went on to become the highest scorer the league has ever seen

LeBron James has changed basketball, but he also changed the lives of all the people he has helped and that of his family and friends. As his admirers, we can only be eternally grateful that he didn’t end up getting on that plane in 2011.
