The era of superteams has taken the league by storm. Over the last decade or so, the NBA has seen a plethora of superteams being formed in the league. Many hold LeBron James responsible for starting the era of superteams in the NBA.
Evidently, LeBron James has played in his fair share of superteams. Even his former teammate Kevin Love once admitted that the 2016 Cleveland Cavaliers were a superteam.
“I mean we were a superteam,” Love said in a 2019 interview with #AskGaryVee. “And we were expected to go to the Finals, expected to have the potential to win a championship.”

The Cleveland Cavaliers paired LeBron James, Kyrie Irving, and Kevin Love in 2015 to win multiple championships. While the Cavs appeared in four straight NBA Finals from 2015 to 2018, they could only win one title in 2016.
The Cavs completed a 3-1 comeback against the 73-9 Golden State Warriors. James delivered on his promise of winning a championship for the Cavaliers. Unfortunately, the Warriors added Kevin Durant to their roster and dominated the Cavs in the 2017 and 2018 NBA Finals with ease.
LeBron James Denied That He Ever Played For A Superteam
Most fans believe Kevin Durant is a superteam merchant since he is all set to play for the fifth superteam of his career following Bradley Beal’s trade to the Phoenix Suns. LeBron James may be one step behind Durant in creating superteams, but to say that he’s never played for one? That’s a stretch.
After losing 4-1 in the 2017 NBA Finals, James claimed that he had never played for a superteam in his career.
“I don’t believe I’ve played for a superteam,” James said. “I don’t believe in that.”
To be honest, LeBron James has played for three superteams in his career. He formed a Big 3 with Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh when he joined the Miami Heat in 2010. The King played with the Heat for four seasons and won two NBA titles in four trips to the finals.
Second, the Cleveland Cavaliers superteam was formed in 2015 after he joined forces with Kevin Love and Kyrie Irving. James still went to the NBA Finals for four straight years but only managed to win one ring.
Lastly, the Los Angeles Lakers tried to create a superteam in 2021 when James and Anthony Davis pushed for a Russell Westbrook trade. This time around, the Lakers couldn’t even make the playoffs before trading Russ in the 2022-23 season.
At the end of the day, LeBron James is one of the greatest players of all time, but he has been part of at least three superteams during his career.
