Kevin Garnett and Kendrick Perkins won an NBA championship together in 2008 with the Boston Celtics, but they weren’t always on the best of terms.
Kendrick Perkins looked up to Kevin Garnett before he came into the league in 2003 when KG was with the Minnesota Timberwolves. But according to the story that Garnett told on All The Smoke, the infatuation didn’t last too long after what he said to Big Perk during their matchup.
“I was like, ‘Why this hothead a** coming, like this garbage a** n****. N****, you’re trash, like who is this?’ Knowing that you’re coming out of high school, knowing that you’re looking up to me but I’m like, ‘I don’t give a f**k who you is. Who? Kendrick Who? Nobody.’ I gave him 12 (points) like real quick like, ‘Y’all better get this nobody off me out here.’”
Kevin Garnett went on to detail how Kendrick Perkins responded, not backing down, but the Big Ticket was the one who had the last laugh. In December 2003, when the Timberwolves took on the Boston Celtics in the regular season, they won comfortably by a margin of 21 points. Perkins played just five minutes, scoring seven points, while Kevin Garnett had a dominant 27 points and 12 rebounds.
The two would go on to become teammates in 2007 when Garnett was moved to the Celtics, and both started for Boston as the franchise won it all in 2008. The type of trash talk Garnett recounted in this clip was second nature to him by that point, he would try to mentally destroy anyone that went up against him.
Kendrick Perkins Said He And Kevin Garnett Had Almost Fought Each Other Before Becoming Teammates
Kevin Garnett was a nightmare matchup for most of the NBA back in his prime, and it didn’t help because he was also saying some nasty stuff on the court. His trash talk has been described as truly ruthless, so it wasn’t surprising when Perkins revealed in 2022 that he and Garnett hated one another before they got together on the Celtics.
“When you have seasoned veterans that understand the assignment and understand the mission, they put their differences aside. Me and Kevin Garnett went through the same thing when he was in Minnesota. We couldn’t stand each other. We was almost going blows in the back of the locker rooms, it happens.”
Listening to these stories now, it’s hard not to feel like the NBA has become a little softer than it used to be. Players still talk trash to one another, but the league has never seen anything on the level of Kevin Garnett since he retired.
