Basketball rarely has times when there are no superstars for players to look up to. Today we are in an era where legends like LeBron James, Kevin Durant, and Stephen Curry are slowing down, but seven years ago, people were wondering how they’d watch the NBA after Kobe Bryant‘s retirement.

Rapper Killer Mike told a story about meeting Kobe and telling him he didn’t know who to watch after Bryant retired. The Black Mamba told the rapper that Stephen Curry was next up.

“I remember asking Kobe, ‘You finna retire on me, I don’t really know who I’m going to be like… He said, ‘I’m going to tell you, it’s this kid if he can stay healthy because he’s skinny… But I think he’s who you should follow. He’s this kid named Steph Curry.’ That’s when I started watching Steph in Golden State and he has not disappointed.

Bryant retired after the 2015-16 season, the year when the Golden State Warriors led by Curry went 73-9. Curry also became the first player in league history to win a unanimous MVP award, marking one of the most dominant individual regular seasons we had ever seen. Unfortunately, he couldn’t win the championship that year.

Stephen Curry Has More Than Lived Up To The Praise

In the seven years since Kobe marked Curry as the next NBA great, the man has won three NBA Championships, a Finals MVP, made six All-Star teams, six All-NBA teams, a scoring title, and an All-Star Game MVP. These were adding to his list of accomplishments that already declared him as a two-time MVP, three-time All-Star, and three-time All-NBA.

Curry has averaged 24.6 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 6.5 assists over his career, showing remarkable consistency whenever he is on the floor. As he’s gotten older, he has made noticeable improvements in his defense as well. Curry is also the all-time leader in three-pointers made.

This might be the greatest career for a player in the last 20 years not named LeBron James, so Curry didn’t disappoint Kobe with the faith that the late Lakers legend had.
