After a trip to the Eastern Conference Finals, the Boston Celtics still have every reason to trust in the future of their talented core. But despite the talent and success that Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown have shown together, it hasn’t been enough to finish the job and the young stars remain without a title after years of promising runs.

Amidst much debate on the subject, former Celtics big man Shaquille O’Neal offered his own solution, although it may not be what Celtics fans were wanting to hear.

“I don’t want five stars on my team,” said Shaq. “I want a guy that I can go to every night, I want a guy that’s going to lead, and I want three dogs, three others. I would prefer if they were specialists: one to be a shooter, one to be a rebounder, and one to be a fighter.”

According to the Diesel, a championship team is as much about depth as it is about star power, and trading Jaylen for the right package might give them more of the balance they’ve been looking for.

“I would, business wise, break them up and use one of them to get the pieces I want,” said O’Neal. “I would say Tatum is the number one. Use Brown to bring in a Brown-type player and then just do it like that. It’ll be good for Brown because it’ll give him the opportunity to be number one somewhere because he’s a number one caliber player.”

What’s Next For The Celtics?

Needless to say, the Celtics have some big decisions to make this offseason. With both Jayson and Jaylen eligible for supermax deals, the Cs will have to decide how much they value their star duo.

This past season, though admittedly inconsistent, Jayson Tatum proved to be the star that the Celtics need. With an average of 30.1 points, 8.8 rebounds, and 4.6 assists per game this past season, Jayson had a career year and there is no doubt that Boston will look to him to lead them to success.

For Jaylen Brown, he’s still one of the best two-way wings in the league, but his flaws got exposed to an ugly degree in the postseason and there are rumors he could leave the Celtics if extension talks do not go his way this summer.

But after another failed playoff run, it seems like a given now that something has to give for this franchise, and where else is there for them to look but the tandem that started it all?
