The Golden State Warriors need to re-tool to keep their championship window open, but the man that built this dynasty might not be around to give them one last push.
Shams Charania and Anthony Slater have reported that the Warriors are bracing for General Manager Bob Myers to be leaving the franchise this summer.
“The Golden State Warriors and president of basketball operations Bob Myers have had no substantial contract extension talks in months and the sides are bracing for the likelihood that Myers could walk away from the franchise,” league sources told The Athletic. “His contract is up on June 30. Both sides exchanged offers and counter-offers several months ago, and there has since been no traction on a new deal, league sources say.”
Myers reportedly will be recruited by rival teams and also franchises in other sports given his analytical model to success that’s worked in Golden State. The Warriors will likely have to make Myers one of the highest-paid GMs in all of sports to ensure he remains with the team, which is going to be a sticking point.
Do The Warriors Need Myers For More Success?
Myers has been the GM of the Warriors since 2012 and has been instrumental in their success. At the same time, Myers’ poor draft record in recent years has hamstrung the Warriors’ development, putting them somewhere in the middle of a rebuild and contention this season. Either way, Steve Kerr and Draymond Green have already campaigned for Myers to return, so it’ll be interesting to see what happens next.
The GM also shares a close bond with Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson, having not broken up the dup when he took the role in 2012 despite repeated opportunities to do so. He ensured Klay would get a lucrative contract in the summer of 2019 after he tore his ACL. Both Klay and Green would want Myers in charge of their contract extension talks, so they may be left out in the cold after their recent performances under a new GM.
A massive summer awaits the Warriors, as they look to make sense of their current roster to see what pieces can be moved to build a stronger contender. If Golden State allows their GM situation to stretch out till the end of June and beyond the 2023 NBA Draft, they may be in trouble. At least the presumed replacement is Mike Dunleavy Jr., a former player, and the current assistant GM.
