The Golden State Warriors have plenty of offensive weapons, and Jordan Poole is undoubtedly among them. Despite breaking out as a borderline star for the Warriors last season, Poole has easily become the team’s most frustrating player and he proved why in Game 1 against the Lakers on Wednesday.
While he managed to surpass the 20-point mark, his game-tying three-point attempt from way beyond the arc was a shock to many, and even his teammate Stephen Curry couldn’t help but watch in horror as Game 1 slipped away.
Clearly, Curry was less than pleased with the shot even though he tried his best to keep his cool. Remember, this isn’t the first time that Poole has been caught in a late-game situation like this. Earlier this season, Curry was ejected from the game after he threw his mouthpiece in reaction to a poor decision from Poole.
In this case, the Warriors actually lost the game and there’s no question that conversations will be had about who should have taken that final shot.
Nevertheless, there’s no changing the results now and the Warriors will have to make adjustments if they want to win Game 2.
Will JP Be On The Warriors Next Season?
We can only assume that Poole will be back in a Warriors jersey next year, but his future has been shrouded in some doubt given his tendency to make mistakes and his lapses of effort defensively, some would argue he has become a liability to the Warriors.
“If you think Jordan Poole is a great player, you don’t know basketball,” said Colin Cowherd. “When you watch him on the floor, he is so bad defensively. In the second half, I thought he cost them the game. On a pretty regular basis, Steve Kerr and Draymond Green call him out… You can’t let role players have huge huge games… It’s a problem.”
The Poole experience is certainly a two-sided one for the defending champions, and they’ve seemingly learned to accept his limitations as a player. Moving forward, while there is some optimism that Jordan can improve his basketball IQ, people will be watching to see how his role changes with the team and how long he can carve out a consistent spot in the rotation despite his deficiencies.
