There have been many moments in the NBA where superstars have put in performances that are hard to believe. Tracy McGrady’s most legendary moment was one of those.
While he was playing for the Houston Rockets in 2004, McGrady single-handedly engineered a miraculous comeback, scoring 13 points in 33 seconds against the San Antonio Spurs. He spoke about it on the Pivot podcast recently.
“I think they do, man,” Tracy McGrady said about people talking about that performance. “Every year, ESPN, the NBA, they put it out there. In China, they have a day for me. They have a day for me in China for that. It’s pretty amazing, so I appreciate that.
“Man, you know, one thing about great players is just the unknown… You don’t know if you’re going to have moments like that… Going back to that game, I was struggling in the beginning. So I was struggling shooting the ball throughout the game. But that last minute of the game, something just clicked. It was just the will to take over.
“Once I hit that first three and that second three, it was a four-point play, I knew it was over… To get Tim Duncan up off his feet, to land on me, and I still get the shot off and it goes in? Ah, sh*t, it’s destiny for us to win this game. If you go back and look at the last play, when they threw the ball into their player, he tripped and fell. No one touched it, and the ball rolls to me. Basketball Gods is talking tonight. So I’m dribbling the ball, head down, get to my spot, pop. Game over.”
Here is a look at Tracy McGrady’s legendary performance when he put up those 13 points in 33 seconds against the San Antonio Spurs. His team won that game 81-80.
Tracy McGrady’s Career Shows He Deserves More Love As An All-Time Great
Tracy McGrady is often remembered as an elite scorer, but injuries robbed him of greater honors. Until 2007, when his back started acting up, McGrady was an incredible scorer, up there with the likes of Allen Iverson and Kobe Bryant.
He led the league in scoring twice, making seven consecutive All-Star teams as well as making seven All-NBA teams. He was at his best with the Houston Rockets, and although he never managed to make a deep playoff run, there is a reason Allen Iverson thought it was a no-brainer that McGrady should make the NBA’s 75th Anniversary Team.
