Dennis Rodman had a great career in the league, winning five NBA Championships. While on the court, he was an excellent player; he was under a lot of heat for his actions off the court.
Rodman flaunted an amazing party lifestyle as he used to party 20-25 times in Las Vegas during the season. But when did it all start? Well, according to Isiah Thomas, Rodman’s lifestyle changed when he joined the Chicago Bulls.
“I thought Chicago turned Rodman out,” Thomas said. “I know you guys turned him out because we [Detroit Pistons] had such a great structure in terms of professionalism. The way we carried ourselves. We wore suit and ties to the games. Everything that we did, we upgraded our travel, hotels, and everything. … We wanted everything to be great for our players. Rodman fit into that structure, and he needed structure. I thought when he got to Chicago, y’all were the party team, and y’all were drinking, going to Vegas before the game. … Hanging out with Madonna. I was like, ‘What happened to Rodman?’ Now you got him in North Korea.”
Isiah Thomas’ assessment could be true, but there is a possibility of an underlying reason behind it. Zeke is known for taking shots at the Chicago Bulls whenever he gets a chance.
Keeping that in mind, Thomas putting the blame for Rodman becoming a party animal on the Bulls holds somewhat less value for fans.
When Did Dennis Rodman Really Become A Party Animal?
Dennis Rodman didn’t have an easy path to the NBA. He had a troubled childhood but overcame those struggles and became a legend of the league.
Anyway, speaking of Rodman’s lifestyle changing all of a sudden, there were many contributors to it. For starters, Rodman looked at former Detroit Pistons head coach, Chuck Daly, as a father figure. Daly left the Pistons after the 1991-92 season, and it arguably had a huge impact on him.
After spending another year with the team, Rodman joined the San Antonio Spurs, where his antics really started to take off. From dyeing his hair color to dating Madonna, Rodman flaunted a very flashy lifestyle as he left the Pistons.
So much so that according to Fox News, Rodman was even found in the front seat of his car with a rifle. Rodman revealed the reason behind it was being a lost place at the time.
“I had a gun in my hand, like in the front seat,” Rodman said. “Luckily I fell asleep, and the cops came and got me. I was in a lost place at that time, just a lost place. That time in my life, I think, was more of a wake-up call, and a rescue call.”
Madonna played a crucial role in getting Rodman out of that difficult time of his life. Many have wondered why Madonna dated Rodman. Well, the latter gave a detailed response to it and believes Madonna saw him as a kid in the candy store.
Her impact on Rodman can never be understated. After all, Madonna introduced him to the Hollywood lifestyle, which the Worm accepted with both arms and is still embracing it to this date.
Considering these events happened in Rodman’s life before joining the Bulls, Isiah Thomas’ claims should be taken with a pinch of salt. The Pistons legend is usually right about a lot of things, but this wasn’t one of them.
