Allen Iverson has lived the type of life that very few NBA players also have. He was an MVP on the court, pound for pound, one of the greatest talents the league has ever witnessed. He was an explosive scorer with the ball in his hand, but even without it and off the court, his life was plenty intense.
In 2005, Allen Iverson and his entourage got into a fight with some other patrons at a nightclub. His bodyguard Jason Kane beat up another bar patron, Marlin Godfrey, and it led to Iverson being sued for $20 million, but paying just $260,000.
“A federal jury awarded $260,000 to one of two men who sued NBA star Allen Iverson after they said they were beaten by his entourage at a Washington nightclub in 2005,” ESPN reported in 2007.
“The jury’s decision against Iverson and his bodyguard, Jason Kane, covers bar patron Marlin Godfrey’s medical bills and pain and suffering… The jury found that Kane was liable for the assault and battery of Godfrey, who was awarded $250,000 for pain and suffering and $10,000 for his medical bills. Iverson was found negligent for failing to supervise Kane.”
Marlin Godfrey and another man, David Kittrell had sued Iverson for $20 million, but the jury chose to not award punitive damages in the case. Iverson could have lost a lot more money if they had decided to make an example out of him, but he seemingly got away with it there.
Allen Iverson had various brushes with the law, and with situations like these throughout his career with the Philadelphia 76ers and the Denver Nuggets. His heart was always in the right place though, it’s hard to find any people that hate Iverson.
Allen Iverson Was Sentenced To 15 Years In Jail But He Took The Positives From That Too
Allen Iverson was sentenced to prison even before he entered the NBA. As a 17-year-old, he received a 15-year sentence but spent only four months incarcerated. And when that happened, he focused on the positives from that too.
“I had to use the whole jail situation as something positive,” Iverson said. “Going to jail, someone sees something weak in you, they’ll exploit it. I never showed any weakness. I just kept going strong until I came out.”
Allen Iverson was far from perfect, but he lived his life as himself, which allowed him to leave such an incredible legacy behind. And considering how bad his financial situation got at one point, he probably got away with one in that particular lawsuit.
