Percy Robert Miller Sr., better known by his rap name, Master P, is one of the most successful musicians in the hip-hop industry. He is a legend, but what many people might not know about him is that he was good at basketball too.
Master P almost made it to the NBA; he was on the training camp roster for both the Charlotte Hornets and the Toronto Raptors during his life. And he was on the Raptors when both Vince Carter and Tracy McGrady were also on the team. He recently told an epic story about that time.
“My whole thing was like, Vince not going to dunk on me and T-Mac not going to dunk on me,” Master P said on All The Smoke. “That was it. Other than that, we was good. I told them, I’m not going to let you do that. I don’t care. I told Vince, I’m like, ‘Look bro, I’m gonna foul you or something, so just chill.’ Two times, three times after that, they didn’t even try to dunk on me.”
Vince Carter and Tracy McGrady are two of the most explosive dunkers in NBA history, so it’s not surprising that this is something Master P would have to specify. But to get them to not do it is impressive and shows the level of charisma he had even then. A lot of rappers and basketball players want to be the other, but Master P is among the few that got close to doing both.
Even Tracy McGrady Was Wary Of Vince Carter’s Dunking Prowess
Vince Carter put a lot of players on a poster during his NBA career, he has a strong case to be considered the GOAT dunker, so Master P was right to be worried. And while Tracy McGrady was great, too, even he knew how intense Carter’s dunks could get. That can be seen from what he told his cousin before they both took part in the Dunk Contest.
“Nah, it wasn’t like that. He had to convince me, and I’m talking about probably to the last hour. I’m like, ‘Cuz, why the hell am I getting in this dunk contest if you’re in it? Boy, we know what’s gonna happen.'”
For Master P to have been able to play against both is a huge achievement, although it’s tough to say whether this story is true or not. In any case, he has a net worth of roughly $200 million through his music endeavors, so it probably doesn’t matter too much.
