Jayson Tatum is hoping to lead the Boston Celtics back to the NBA Finals with Joe Mazulla as their head coach.

Last season, Ime Udoka got the Celtics to the Finals in his first season. It was a wonderful accomplishment before Udoka was suspended and let go for inappropriate workplace behavior. Even still, Tatum called Udoka his favorite coach.

“I can’t take away the relationship that me and (Udoka) had and the impact he had on me in that one season. I love Coach K, I love Brad (Stevens), I love Joe (Mazzulla), I love all those guys but it was just a different kind of relationship I had with Ime. Probably my most favorite coach I’ve had.”

The impact Udoka had on Jayson Tatum as a coach cannot just be ignored, even if Udoka had to leave the Celtics in such acrimonious circumstances. The first NBA Finals for the Celtics in over a decade was achieved by Udoka, and for a player like Tatum that had a long list of Conference Finals losses, it must have meant a lot.

Will Ime Udoka Revolutionize The Rockets?

The Houston Rockets have been one of the worst franchises in the NBA for the last three seasons. That has allowed them to accrue strong young talent through the draft while having the flexibility to add two max contract players if they wanted to. Hiring a coach like Udoka shows the franchise wants to end its rebuild and start pushing for the playoffs again.

With the rumors of James Harden coming back to the franchise and the possibility of drafting Victor Wembanyama, there is a lot of positive buzz in Houston heading into the 2023 off-season. With a young head coach that has proven his quality, the Rockets could take major strides forward once again.
