The NBA surprised everybody on Tuesday night when they announced the suspension of Draymond Green for Game 3 of the Sacramento Kings vs. Golden State Warriors series.
This was shocking for several people, but the league’s executive vice president explained the reasons behind this decision.
“Here’s what it came down to: excessive and over-the-top actions, conduct detrimental and a repeat offender,” Joe Dumars told ESPN in a phone interview Wednesday morning. “That’s what separates this where you end up with a suspension.”
The Detroit Pistons legends admitted that if Draymond didn’t have this history, the situation would’ve had a different outcome, but they would’ve still tried to give it the punishment they considered necessary.
“It may have been, but the act itself still would have been looked at in a serious way — stomping on a guy’s chest. On the back end of this act, you add repeat offender and that’s how you end up getting to a suspension.”
Dumars added that Draymond engaging in a back-and-forth with Kings fans didn’t help his case, especially considering that none other than NBA commissioner Adam Silver was in attendance.
Golden State Warriors Are ‘Livid’ After Learning About Draymond’s Suspension
This decision wasn’t welcomed with good eyes by the Golden State Warriors, who are reportedly furious with the league for suspending Draymond. This isn’t the first time this has happened, and it’ll be a big hit for them in tomorrow night’s game.
This play started plenty of debates around the league on whether he stomped on Domantas Sabonis’ chest on purpose or not, but there’s nothing anybody can do to change the outcome of the play and the league’s decision to suspend Draymond.
The Warriors will be back home in Game 3, which could give them an advantage over their younger rivals. However, without Draymond, the job looks harder for them. Losing another game in the serious would be deadly for them, as nobody has ever returned from a 3-0 deficit in the NBA.
