Stephen Jackson knows a thing or two about finding himself in trouble with the NBA and has repeatedly come to the defense of troubled superstar Ja Morant.
During a recent appearance on Paper Route, Jackson spoke about firing his gun at somebody when he was in the NBA.
“I actually shot a gun at somebody while I was in the NBA,” Jackson said. “I actually been in a fight in the stands and got suspended and lost $3 million. I didn’t just show it, I actually shot it.”
The incident Jackson is talking about here took place on October 6, 2006, when he was a member of the Indiana Pacers. He and a few other Pacers players got into an argument with several patrons at a strip club in Indianapolis called Club Rio. Jackson was reported to have been punched and then hit by a car, although his injuries weren’t serious.
He had fired some shots with his gun and claimed it was in self-defense, but did eventually plead guilty to a felony count of criminal recklessness. He received one year of probation, was ordered to pay a fine of $5,000 and perform 100 hours of community service. The Pacers, unlike the Grizzlies with Morant, did not suspend Jackson but the NBA suspended him for the first seven games of the 2007-08 season. The fight in the stands that Jackson spoke about there was, of course, the Malice at the Palace and he was suspended for 30 games for his involvement in that infamous brawl.
Stephen Jackson Claims Ja Morant Didn’t Need Counselling
Not long after he flashed a gun on his Instagram Live, Morant entered a counseling program in Florida. Many felt it was the right thing to do as he had displayed very troubling behavior over the last year or so, but Jackson firmly believes that Ja didn’t need counseling.
He feels that Morant just made a bad decision and that he doesn’t need to talk to anybody. Jackson added that there is nothing wrong with Ja and that the counselor wouldn’t be able to relate to him anyway. He wants Morant to just back to playing basketball, which is what he is doing now.
