The Ja Morant gun incident has been a huge topic of discussion as of late, and there’s no doubt that it has caused a lot of speculation about the situation, and what will end up happening to the Memphis Grizzlies point guard.

Recently, Shaquille O’Neal delivered his take on the incident. He claimed that it was a “bad choice” and a “bad decision”, noting that Morant should have had the “common sense” to know that this wasn’t a good choice.

“It was a bad choice, it was a bad decision… There’s no excuse for what he did. You got to have enough common sense to know that wasn’t going to go the way you wanted it to go. You’re not a rapper, you’re an NBA player.”

There is no doubt that this is a sound take from Shaquille O’Neal, and it is clear that Ja Morant willingly put himself into an unfortunate situation. Hopefully, he can refrain from doing so in the future, and the goal is to never repeat such a careless action once again. He notably went out to the club after getting called out in a players-only meeting on his off-court behavior, and it is clear that  he has a lot of learning to do.

This season, Ja Morant has averaged 27.1 PPG, 6.0 RPG, and 8.2 APG for the Memphis Grizzlies prior to this incident. It is unclear as of right now whether the point guard will be able to return this season, and we’ll see what happens in the future.

Ja Morant May Need More Of A Veteran Presence In The Locker Room

The goal for the Memphis Grizzlies franchise going forward will be to ensure that Ja Morant has positive influences around him. One NBA analyst suggested that they should sign Carmelo Anthony, as he went through similar issues earlier in his career.

“There are a lot of similarities between Ja and Carmelo Anthony early in his career, and a lot of the issues that Carmelo had. He ended up getting an honest group of people around him, family, business people, and teammates, that basically told him what he was doing wrong and how to stop, and how to move on, use basketball as a tool for greatness. If you look at Melo now, all the things that went on early in his career are a side note to all the good things he’s done on the court… Memphis Grizzlies, Carmelo is a free agent. This is an elite player who knows what Ja has gone through and who’s higher than him in terms of career success. Why not bring Carmelo Anthony into that locker room and have him sit next to Ja and have him end up making all these things a footnote in his career.”

This is definitely a solid suggestion, as the Grizzlies in general are one of the youngest teams in the league. Having a respected voice like Carmelo Anthony could help Ja Morant and the Grizzlies avoid further issues of this nature in the future.

Hopefully, we see this situation have a good resolution. Though Ja Morant clearly messed up, this could end up being a learning opportunity and a wake up call for the young point guard.
