After Ja Morant found himself in hot water for flashing a gun on his Instagram Live, some comparisons were drawn between him and Gilbert Arenas.
Arenas had brought unloaded firearms to the Washington Wizards locker room in 2009 and it was reported that he and then-teammate Javaris Crittenton had drawn guns at each other as well. The former All-Star recently spoke about the consequences of the incident during an appearance on the Draymond Green Show.
“Going through that situation with Javaris, it was really shocking,” Arenas said. “Because my whole thing was like man you can do a hundred things right, you make one mistake, it erases your whole legacy. My whole legacy is cleared out for one bad decision, one bad judgment… Just worldwide over, this one thing is what, you’re judging me off of now.”
When the mistake is that big, it is enough to cast a black mark on your legacy, which is what has happened with Arenas. The argument between them was reportedly over gambling debts and it just blew over. He was sentenced to 30 days in a halfway house as well as two years probation and his reputation was tarnished forever. Both he and Crittenton were also suspended for the rest of that season.
While many think of that incident as the reason for Arenas’ play declining on the court, it was actually injuries that slowed him down. After being an All-Star for three years in a row from 2005 to 2007 when he averaged 27.7 PPG to go with 5.7 APG, Arenas tore his MCL in the 2007 playoffs and was never the same player after that.
Gilbert Arenas Talked About Ja Morant’s Incident
Arenas was always going to be asked for his thoughts on Morant’s situation and he said that when you’re young, you do stupid things. When asked what he would do about the situation if he was the owner of the Memphis Grizzlies, Arenas replied that he would do what every owner does, which is pretend that he didn’t see it.
As for what the Grizzlies are doing, Morant has been suspended and head coach Taylor Jenkins stated that there was no timetable for Ja’s return to the court. They are going to take their time to properly evaluate this situation, which is understandable.
