The Dallas Mavericks have been 1-4 in the games Kyrie Irving and Luka Doncic have shared the hardwood together and the latter’s father gave him some valuable advice about the way forward amid his struggles to adjust with the team’s superstar.

Per The Dallas Morning News, the guard revealed what his dad Drederick, who he considers his “harshest critic” told him. “He just told me to stay aggressive. It looked like I was overthinking out there, and I was just telling him like, ‘Yeah, we have new lineups. I’m playing with new guys out there.'”

He further added: “It’s an adjustment period. As much as I would love to play well, it doesn’t happen as often as you would like. But I think moving forward, when I can ease kind of my own burdens or overthinking, I think things will naturally flow.”

Barring their blowout 142-116 win over the San Antonio Spurs, the Mavericks lost games to the Minnesota Timberwolves, the Denver Nuggets, and Los Angeles Lakers.

Kyrie Irving Opens Up About The Pressure That Comes After Being Part Of The Biggest Midseason Trade

As if Kyrie Irving’s request for a trade from the Brooklyn Nets wasn’t news enough, his move to the Dallas Mavericks made headlines, and that comes with its own pressure.

Irving did admit that the move did have an impact on him. Per the outlet, he termed it to be natural but also meant it came with the desire to do extra.

“It comes with it, and also as a human being, I just naturally want to fit in with everybody and not step on anyone’s toes,” the 30-year-old explained.

“But the magnitude of the moment sometimes warrants special people to go above and beyond and do extra things. I’m at that place now, but I just think I need to scale back and let the game come to me and flow into it because when we’re playing tense, I can feel the intensity around me and I think I just got to settle in and stay poised like I always say.”

For now, the hope is that the Mavericks figure it out and fast. Irving and Doncic are a dynamic offensive powerhouse when they click together, and while the start hasn’t been what they expected it to be, the think-tank and the team will pray that the two will figure out a way to play seamlessly alongside each other.
