Moments after firing head coach Nate McMillan, the Atlanta Hawks narrowed the search for his replacement down to a few notable candidates.
By splitting with McMillan now, the Hawks got a head start on connecting with some of the game’s most decorated and widely-respected coaching names.
One is former Jazz coach Quin Snyder, who the Hawks are angling to sign as soon as possible. According to Shams Charania, Snyder has already started formal discussions with the organization.
The Atlanta Hawks have started formal discussions with former Utah Jazz coach Quin Snyder and are attempting to hire Snyder swiftly during the season, league sources tell The Athletic.
While Snyder has reportedly been out of the country, the Hawks secured a virtual meeting this week and are currently setting up an in-person meeting that will likely happen later this month.
Snyder, who coached the Utah Jazz for eight seasons, is widely revered for his coaching ability, leadership qualities, and his history of getting star players to buy into his system. He helped lead the Jazz to one of their most prosperous stretches in franchise history and only left after they committed to a hard rebuild.
In Atlanta, Snyder will bring the same things he did in Utah, and there is hope he will find new and exciting ways to utilize Trae Young, John Collins, and Dejounte Murray in ways we’ve never seen before.
Can The Hawks Make A Run In The Final Chapter Of The Season?
At 29-30, the Hawks are very much in the thick of the playoff race out East. Just a few games back from the 6th-seeded Knicks, they have time to rise up the standings before it’s all said and done.
A new voice and updated game plan could be all the Hawks need to make a run and capitalize on a weak Eastern Conference. Still, Atlanta is going to need more than a new coach to fix all of their problems.
All season long, Trae Young has been the story of the Southeast Division for all the wrong reasons. If the Hawks are going to get anywhere meaningful this year, the star point guard is going to have to play better than he has through the first 59 games of this season.
Let’s see if he rises to the occasion…
