The 2023 NBA All-Star Weekend was arguably one of the least impressive events the NBA has put on in recent years. Not only did Utah serve to be an underwhelming host city, but the action through the weekend was also average.
The All-Star game itself was arguably one of the worst All-Star games in history, with Michael Malone and Jaylen Brown dissing the game despite being a part of it. The ratings have now shown how poor of a weekend this was for the NBA.
The ratings for the game have fallen 29% from last season while viewership was down 27%. This is the steepest decline in ratings since 2000 and this year’s edition is comfortably the least-watched All-Star game ever.

With players like Stephen Curry and Kevin Durant being ruled out before the weekend, Giannis Antetokounmpo sitting down after a minute, and LeBron James not returning after halftime. The game didn’t attract the fans it usually does and the reasons behind that are multifold.
Why Were The Ratings So Low For All-Star Weekend?
Simply put, there wasn’t anything to look forward to. The All-Star game had a convoluted format with the pre-game draft not living up to the expectations it had. Many players like Nikola Jokic and Luka Doncic looked like they didn’t even want to participate in the contest.
No player showed defensive effort, with players like Shai Gilgeous-Alexander even getting upset that LeBron James blocked one of his layup attempts. If the players won’t care, the fans won’t. There was nothing engaging about the weekend and the NBA will have to improve the quality of the contest next year.
