Most players in the NBA nowadays tend to treat the regular season much less seriously than they treat the playoffs. After all, winning the NBA Championship is the ultimate goal for every player in the league. But performing well in the regular season has its own perks as well.

One such perk is winning the regular season MVP award. But there are way too many variables going on behind the scenes to determine which player will win the MVP award.

Among those variables is the one regarding how many minimum games the regular season MVP award winner should play in the regular season. The Chicago Bull star DeMar DeRozan had an interesting response to the question.

Via The Athletic:

DeRozan: “All of them. All 82. … Minimum? 78.”

Yes, DeRozan believes the player who wins the MVP award should ideally play all 82 games in the regular season or at least 78 games. But is DeRozan the only person who shares this ideology?

Paul George Somewhat Agrees With DeMar DeRozan’s Answer

Considering the rise in the practice of load managing, it’s rare to see players play all 82 games in the regular season. While DeRozan’s ask may seem a bit too much, the general idea behind it was to see the MVP winner play the majority of the games.

Los Angeles Clippers star Paul George seemed to somewhat agree with DeRozan’s answer. As George said, the player in question should play 75 to 82 games in the regular season to become the MVP of the league.

George:“I think if you play at least 75 to the full 82, it just says a lot about that particular player to be able to do it for that many games. To go that long into the season with consistency requires to just be healthy and available on a nightly basis. You got to play the majority of them.”

The current favorite to win the 2023 MVP award, Nikola Jokic, somewhat fits this theory. Jokic has a tendency to put up big numbers, and that too on a nightly basis. He doesn’t miss a lot of games and is generally available for the Denver Nuggets when he’s needed the most.
