Stephen A. Smith wasn’t happy with how the Boston Celtics handled the Ime Udoka situation, and he made his views on it pretty clear.
The franchise suspended the coach for 2022-23 after it came to light that he allegedly had an affair with one of the female staffers in the organization. Earlier, the team finally took off the interim tag of Joe Mazzulla and named him the permanent head coach.
This had Smith saying that the Celtics management could have “handled it differently” and, speaking to Jay Williams on ESPN’s ‘First Take,’ shared his two cents on the development.
“They put him on front street. With his personal business, and I happen to know many occasions where that never happened to people who look a lot differently than me or you. This is where I make people uncomfortable, and I don’t give two damns about it. Y’all full of it, and it really ticks me off with that.”
While adding that Udoka cannot be absolved, Smith also likened his suspension to the police brutality against Black people in America.
“What we can do is point out the inconsistency. When you talk about Black folks and what we’re really aspiring for, what you’re talking about fair and equal treatment. Not just under the law but period. No matter what may disgust us as a people, if you do to everybody, what you do to us, we gon’ go like this: ‘that’s the way it goes.’
With Mazzulla being announced as head coach, it appears that Udoka’s time with the Celtics has officially come to an end.
Nia Long Took A Shot At The Boston Celtics Earlier
Prior to the recent news, Udoka’s suspension and the subsequent handling of the whole fiasco didn’t sit down well with Nia Long either, and earlier described the incident as a “gut punch.”
She made the February cover of The Cut, and spoke with Clover Hope, revealing how life has taken a drastic turn since the controversy erupted.
The Celtics made a choice to make my family business public, and I don’t understand why. It could’ve all been handled internally. I do understand why, but I can’t talk about it. Maybe one day I will. You know, fear drives stupidity, and I’ll leave that right there. I’ve learned that I’m stronger than I ever thought I was.
The whole murky event hasn’t been easy on Long, but fortunately, it appears that she is doing better. Recent reports suggested that she has been interested in someone else.
On the season front, the current Celtics team was within striking distance of winning the championship last season, and this year, they will look to make amends. Mazzulla has done a fabulous job of keeping their competitive spirit burning, and only time will tell if they indeed have another banner going up.
