The NBA is the biggest basketball league in the world, and that has been the case for several decades now. Evidently, the league has seen some amazing players don their skills and impress fans around the globe. The Los Angeles Lakers legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is certainly one such player.

Kareem is undoubtedly one of the GOATs of the Lakers, and for many, he has a legitimate case for being considered the overall GOAT as well. One of the reasons for that narrative was Kareem holding the NBA’s all-time scoring record for nearly 40 years.

But the record no longer belongs to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. LeBron James recently broke the record and is now the NBA’s all-time scoring leader.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s True Feelings On LeBron James Breaking His Scoring Record

During the Showtime Lakers era, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Magic Johnson carried the Lakers to five NBA Championships together. Obviously, after spending so many years together, the two players know each other’s competitive nature pretty well.

Keeping that in mind, a few months ago, Magic claimed that when LeBron James broke Kareem’s all-time scoring record, the 75-year-old wouldn’t take it well. But Abdul-Jabbar proved his former teammate wrong.

Via Substack:

I love Earvin and, after forty years of friendship, he knows me pretty well. If he publicly announced that I had suddenly shrunk to 5’2”, even I would be tempted to believe him. But, in this case, he was very, very wrong. I don’t blame him for thinking that I might be bothered because he knows how competitive I used to be. And, if someone had broken my record within ten years of me setting it, he would probably be right. I might have hobbled out of retirement just to add a few more points on my record.

But that ain’t me today. I’m 75. The only time I ever think of the record is when someone brings it up. I retired from the NBA 34 years ago. For the past 20 years, I’ve occupied myself with social activism, my writing career, and my family—especially my three grandchildren. If I had a choice of having my scoring record remain intact for another hundred years or spend one afternoon with my grandchildren, I’d be on the floor in seconds stacking Legos and eating Uncrustables.

Kareem explained in his article that he simply didn’t think about his all-time scoring record as much as the media and his teammates thought he did. Instead, he would rather have a lovely afternoon with his grandchildren.
