One key issue that has dominated this iteration of the Los Angeles Clippers is their lack of a true point guard. Patrick Beverley wasn’t the answer after they got Paul George and Kawhi Leonard, and both Rajon Rondo and John Wall haven’t had much success in their roles either.
The lack of playmaking has caused issues for the Clippers as they have fallen out of playoff contention time and time again. Despite making it to the Western Conference Finals, the Clippers have lost for various reasons and are yet to see the NBA Finals. The team is looking to include John Wall as they try to add some size in a trade as well, but per the Ringer, the latest links are to two guards.
“League sources say the Clippers are also interested in Kyle Lowry and Fred VanVleet. Lowry makes $28.3 million, and his decline with the Heat has been even more apparent this season than Conley’s dip with the Jazz. While Lowry fell out entirely in the most recent update.
“VanVleet, who is at no. 76, is overall the best target for the Clippers considering he’s only 28, he’s a relentless on-ball defender, and he was an All-Star just last season.”
Both point guards played with Kawhi Leonard during the 2018-19 season when the Toronto Raptors won it all. They were instrumental to that, but Kyle Lowry and Fred VanVleet both aren’t the same players they were then. And the Clippers still retain an interest in another really good point guard.
Los Angeles Clippers Are Looking At Mike Conley Jr.
The Clippers have been linked with a move for Mike Conley as well, with John Wall’s injury causing them some problems. Marc Stein reported on their interest recently.
“Sources say they also have trade interest in Utah’s Mike Conley Jr. amid a rising belief leaguewide that the Jazz — who have tumbled to No. 9 in the West at 22-24 after their great start — could become a much-needed seller at this deadline. The Clippers’ backcourt depth just took a hit with the news that John Wall is out for at least two weeks with an abdominal strain.”
Kyle Lowry and Mike Conley are both averaging a lot less than points than Fred VanVleet, who is on almost 20 a game. On stats alone, VanVleet seems like the better option. The fact remains that if the Clippers don’t add someone soon, they might end up not being able to maximize their potential.
