Christian Wood may not be the secondary star Mavericks fans were hoping for, but he’s been playing well enough for the Mavericks so far. With averages of 18 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 1.2 blocks per game, he is probably Dallas’ best scorer, not named Luka Doncic.

This week, Wood went viral on NBA Twitter, but not for anything he did on the court. Instead, it was a hilarious moment with fans that made their rounds online.

Fan: “Can I take a photo? I’m a Rockets fan.”

Christian Wood: “Nah I can’t take photos with Rockets fans.”

Wood rejected the poor guy to his face before walking back and taking the picture after a few seconds. He must have seen the disappointment on that young fan’s face.

On a more serious note, though, Christian Wood has been huge for the Mavericks this season, and his play alongside Luka has helped them hold the 5th best record in the West.

Will Christian Wood Be Traded This Season?

It’s no secret that the Mavs are on the hunt for some additional star power, and Christian Wood is probably one of their biggest trade assets right now. According to various reports, he could be on the trade block this season as contract talks with Dallas continue to be negotiated.

Wood is now eligible to sign a four-year, $77 million extension, an idea that brings a smile to his face.

“I’m happy to be here. That’s what I’ll say,” Wood told ESPN after his 30-point performance in a Christmas win against the Lakers. “The vibe is good. … I’m open to it.”

Sources told ESPN the Mavs have interest in a two-year extension, which would be for a maximum of $36 million. That would give Wood security and preserve long-term flexibility for the Mavs, who could have significant salary-cap space in the summer of 2025.

As things stand, the Mavs are in a good spot. While this roster likely isn’t going to get them a title, they might only be one or two more pieces away, and that’s more that can be said for a lot of teams.

For his part, Wood will keep showing up to play as he has for the past 39 games. Even with the future uncertain, his focus is on the Mavericks and doing whatever he can to help them win at the highest level.

Along the way, he may stop and pose for some pictures with the fans.
