Michael Jordan might have been the greatest player that the game of basketball has ever seen but his record as an owner is not as pretty as he would want it to be. Ever since Jordan took over the Charlotte Bobcats and renamed them the Hornets, the team has been among the bottom feeders of the NBA.
Jordan’s passion for the game is still there, though questionable decisions over the years have severely impacted how the teams the Hornets have put together, with this year being no exception.
When the Hornets had a young Malik Monk, MJ was still a regular presence courtside at Hornets games. During a timeout, MJ is having a conversation with the young Monk and proceeds to slap him in the back of the head. Naturally, it was in jest as the pair chuckled before they continued.

In the 2017 NBA Draft, the Hornets drafted Malik Monk 11th overall, a player MJ took a liking to. Monk is a dynamic scorer and is proving that this season with the Sacramento Kings, as his development stalled in Charlotte before he left for the Lakers in 2021 and joined the Kings this season.
Michael Jordan’s Stint As Owner Of The Hornets
Jordan became the majority owner of the Hornets in February 2010, with his first full season being the 2010-11 season. MJ’s record as the owner of the franchise has been 407-576, including the worst season in NBA history when the Bobcats got a record of 7-56 in the 2011-12 season.
There have been innumerable draft mistakes for the small market team who have never swung big in free agency. Kemba Walker has been the best product of this era so far, though there are positive signs in the current roster. LaMelo Ball won Rookie of the Year in 2021 and became an All-Star last season. His success will lead the Hornets to great heights, provided Michael Jordan finally builds a strong roster around his young star.
