Bill Simmons Warns LeBron James That Luka Doncic Could Overtake His Scoring Record After He Surpasses Kareem Abdul-Jabbar: “Don’t Wrap It Up When You Get To 38,000”

Speaking on his podcast, Bill Simmons said Luka Doncic could pass LeBron James in scoring, speculated on how likely it is to happen.

LeBron James is on the cusp of achieving something that no one else has since Kareem Abdul-Jabbar set the record for most points scored in the NBA at the end of his career. The King is just 611 points behind Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and if he continues scoring at his nearly 28 points-a-game speed, he will cross Kareem’s record sooner rather than later.

The King is struggling to help his team win games in Anthony Davis’ absence, but he is on track to get the record sooner rather than later. He’s not the only superstar balling out at the minute, though, Luka Doncic just had an incredibly historic night against the New York Knicks. He managed to win against the Lakers in the game before this one as well, and while he beat LeBron on the night, Bill Simmons spoke on his podcast about how he might surpass King James in other ways.

“He’s [Doncic] over 8,000 points now. He’s 23 years old. By the end of this season, he’ll be pretty close to 10,000 assuming he doesn’t get hurt. LeBron, after five years, was 10,689.

He had had two first-team All-NBAs, two second-teams. Luka already has three first-team All-NBAs. Man, LeBron better keep playing. Don’t wrap it up after you get to 38,000 ’cause I don’t know what Luka is capable of.”

Doncic crossed 8,000 points scored during his 60-point explosion, and at 33.6 points a game, he could end the season almost at 10,000 points. His scoring has leaped this season, and if he stays healthy, it’s hard to see him slowing down for at least 12-13 more years. Achieving longevity like LeBron James is easier said than done, something Simmons himself acknowledged.

Bill Simmons On What Could Stop Luka Doncic From Reaching The Same Heights As LeBron James

The key factor here is that LeBron James is far from done. He is playing without missing a beat in Year 20, and he could very much reach 40,000 points before he retires. And what it takes to reach that is not something Doncic might have, as Simmons admitted.

“I think the difference for him [Doncic] potentially versus LeBron is how is he gonna take care of his body. LeBron took care of his body always, always. … His durability and his strength has been one of his calling cards. … I don’t know about Luka.”

Doncic made jokes about getting a beer after his monster performance, and it’s things like that which would raise question marks about his long-term ability to achieve such a feat. LeBron James has entered the GOAT conversation thanks to his incredible career, and as great as Luka already is, he has a long way to go before he can be mentioned in the same breath as the King.
