Former Suns forward Eddie Johnson had an interesting take on the source of the boos in Smoothie King Center on Sunday afternoon.
Late into the second half against the New Orleans Pelicans, the Suns were already without Devin Booker and in a position to lose their fourth straight game when the crowd started showering Chris Paul with some heavy boos.
While most viewers did nothing but watch the scene, Eddie Johnson made sure to let the world know that he thinks those boos are fake. During some commentary in the second quarter, here’s what he had to say:
“They are booing, but they got a machine in here that kinda echoes the boos, okay?” he said. “Alright, trust me, this crowd is not as loud as it seems. And they’re loud, I’ll give their respect. But they got a machine in here that’s really working wonders, man. I’ll tell you that right now ’cause I’m looking at people’s mouths, and they’re not saying anything, but yet, it’s a lot of boos.”

It’s certainly an interesting theory from the former Sixth Man of the Year, but it’s hard to believe such a claim without any evidence. The fact that he clearly has a bias toward the Suns doesn’t help his case, either.
But whether the boos are real or not, fans have a lot to get loud for when it comes to Pels basketball this season — and that goes beyond just Zion Williamson.
Can The Pelicans Make A Run To The Finals?
As winners of 7 of their last 10 games, New Orleans is now the top seed in the West with Zion Williamson, Brandon Ingram (when healthy), and CJ McCollum leading the way.
As the only team consistently in the top 5 on both offense and defense this season, they deserve to be treated like a legitimate postseason threat.
“I have the New Orleans Pelicans as the No. 1 sleeper in the entire NBA. The Pelicans can end up in the Conference Finals, the Pelicans can end up in the Finals. They got a crew, they’re long, they’re athletic, they can get physical, they got shooters, they got athletes, and they got a whole bunch of heart. They ain’t scared of anybody, and they got young fresh legs. If Zion Williamson was healthy last year, they might have beaten Phoenix in the playoffs. If Zion Williamson stays healthy, I’m telling you right now, New Orleans is a huge threat, a huge threat,” Smith convincingly said.
It remains to be seen if the Pelicans can reach the heights of success in the West this season, but they certainly look good so far.
Hopefully, they can continue this tear and squash all the doubts about their potential once and for all.
