Carmelo Anthony is considered one of the best players in New York Knicks history. He spent a large portion of his career with the franchise, showing off his scoring prowess frequently. During his six full seasons with the team, Carmelo Anthony averaged 24.5 PPG, 7.0 RPG, and 3.2 APG.

As of right now, Carmelo Anthony remains a free agent. There is no doubt that he could help a number of teams with his 3PT shooting, even if he is no longer a star. An NBA executive previously suggested that the New York Knicks should try to sign Carmelo Anthony.

“Like, why not just sign Melo already? If they make a trade and they wind up with a roster spot, they’ve got to do that,” the exec told Deveney. “They need a good story. He needs a good ending. Make it happen, right?”

Though the New York Knicks signing Carmelo Anthony would give him a storybook ending to his career, it seems as though that may not end up happening, despite the suggestion of the executive.

The New York Knicks Don’t Want To Sign Carmelo Anthony

According to a recent report, the New York Knicks have no plans to reunite with their former star. Steve Popper of Newsday has recently revealed that the New York Knicks are unlikely to sign Carmelo Anthony due to his poor defense.

It seemed destined to be a reunion. Unlike the Phil Jackson era, when the front office tried to run Anthony out of town, his long-time agent, Rose, is running the show. His son, Kyan, is playing ball locally at Christ the King High School. So could he make one last farewell run through Madison Square Garden?

Probably not.

Anthony has been without a job this season, the second time this has happened to him in recent years. The first time, he resurrected his career in Portland and then helped out the Lakers. But based on one Knicks source, the indications are that Anthony would not fit the style the Knicks are trying to play — namely defense.

This report definitely makes sense, as Tom Thibodeau is a defensive-minded coach that values that end of the floor heavily. Carmelo Anthony is a valuable player on offense, but his defense these days is definitely not his strong suit.

Though the New York Knicks may not end up signing Carmelo Anthony, perhaps he could find a spot on another team. He is definitely still a valuable addition to a team on a veteran minimum contract, and hopefully, we see Anthony suit up in the NBA once again.
