Draymond Green is entering another season with the Golden State Warriors, ready to defend their 2022 NBA championship and win their 5th title in 9th years. This would be an incredible feat for Green and the Dubs, but it might not secure the big man’s presence on the team in the future.
After winning the 2022 title, the Dubs had some hard decisions to make, letting some of their role players go, given their inability to keep them all on the payroll. Juan Toscano-Anderson, Gary Payton II, Otto Porter Jr., and more left the Dubs to find a new challenge in the league.
Surprisingly, Green has been linked with a move away from the Bay, too, as he’s looking for a huge contract that the Warriors won’t likely offer to him. This situation has put the Californians in a complex situation, and although general manager Bob Myers has made it clear they plan to keep not only Draymond but Jordan Poole and Andrew Wiggins, rumors keep coming suggesting a Green exit.
NBA Executive Claims Draymond Green Is Open To Leaving The Warriors
Green is locked in for this upcoming season, and the Dubs are ready to compete to defend their throne, but the drama surrounding Draymond and his desire to get a new max contract will get bigger if the team doesn’t figure this out before it becomes a serious issue.
One anonymous NBA executive claims that Green does not want to leave the Warriors, but he wouldn’t be against the idea if he feels another team can give him a contract he feels happy with.
“He does not want to, but if you ask around, I think there is a sense that he would,” a Western Conference executive told Sean Deveney of Heavy. “There is a limit on how much they’re going to spend to keep this thing together and because they have young guys are just about every position, they’re approaching it like there’s no one outside of Steph that they have to keep. Look, it would suck for them if Draymond left, it would suck to call up Steph and have to tell him, but Draymond has made it clear he is about player power. If he gets a big offer from Detroit as one example or maybe Dallas or the Lakers, somewhere he would like to play? He is not going to be shy about leaving. He understands this business.”
Recent rumors suggest that Draymond could end up in Dallas, helping out Luka Doncic, playing off him, and creating an interesting dynamic with the Mavericks. Green isn’t a player for any team in the league, but he could work well with Luka in Texas, becoming another playmaker while being a problem for rivals on defense.
The Detroit Pistons have been mentioned as a potential destination for Green, too, and it was rumored that he would like to return home if given a chance. It’s way too early to predict what will happen with Draymond whether the Warriors win another title or not this upcoming season. Still, some are already preparing to see a situation where the former Defensive Player of the Year is no longer a Golden State Warrior.
