Michael Jordan is the greatest player of all time, but his influence after retiring hasn’t always been a highly successful one. MJ has owned a controlling interest in the Charlotte Hornets since the 2010 season, and the team has failed to reach great heights under the GOAT. His ownership and decisions have been called into question a few times during his tenure; the team hasn’t finished higher than the 6th seed in the entire time that he has been the owner.
Even in that time, the Hornets haven’t been able to make it past the first round of the playoffs the two times that they have made it at all. Their inability to attract big names and then keep them if they have them has hurt the franchise, with MJ’s ownership not being able to change much for the team, even if he is now loved by the team’s star LaMelo Ball. However, a lack of passion is not something that Jordan can be called out for; his reactions on the sideline are a sight to behold.
A clip from the season where Jordan was seen yelling from his seat in the front row at a game has gone viral, leading to a variety of reactions from NBA fans:
“He bout to hop on the court and show them how it’s really done.”
“Honestly, throw Jordan in the game. I’ll say 17 pts off the bench.”
“I want him to be the coach.”
“Wish every owner were this passionate about their teams.”
“MJ clearly cares but his ownership hasn’t really been anything to write home about for Charlotte.”
“Unretiring in 3, 2…..”
“He took it personally.”
“How can you be the GOAT and one of the worst owners at the same time?”
“He looks like he could still get 15 and 5.”
“MJ is one more season away from suiting up himself.”
“Imagine if a ref had to give Michael Jordan a tech.”
The good thing for the Hornets is that they now have an exciting young team with plenty of reason to be optimistic about the future. LaMelo Ball is an excellent piece to build around, and if he can take the next step, the Hornets will be able to contend in the playoffs for the first time in a long time.
