Devin Booker Shuts Down Rumors Of Fractured Relationship With Suns HC Mike Budenholzer

Devin Booker didn't want to fan any flames surrounding his relationship with head coach Mike Budenholzer.

Devin Booker spoke ahead of the Phoenix Suns‘ game against the Minnesota Timberwolves tonight. When talking about his relationship with Suns head coach Mike Budenholzer, he noted that he and coach Bud are on the same page and have a great relationship, despite rumors and reports that suggest otherwise. Booker added that their dynamic is no different than any other player-coach dynamic.

“No, coach said it too – we have multiple conversations and I can’t seem to find one that sticks out more than others. It’s a player-coach relationship. When things start going back, everybody tries to point the finger to find out what is wrong. People are gonna come up with stuff. The relationship is great. We’re on the same page, we’re trying to win, and that’s that.”

Booker was responding to a report recently that claimed Budenholzer told Booker to tone his voice down, something that surprised the former All-Star. However, it appears, at least for now, that things between Booker and Budenholzer are fine, and the player didn’t really experience any frustration with the conversation that was reportedly had.

However, some believe that Booker’s stint with the Phoenix Suns is in jeopardy. One NBA insider hinted at the possibility of Booker being traded in the offseason, especially if the Suns flounder in the playoffs once again. Booker being traded along with Durant, who is almost guaranteed to be leaving, would signal the beginning of a rebuild for the Suns under the new ownership of Mat Ishbia.

Where Should Booker Be Traded?

Devin Booker is perhaps the best player the Suns have ever drafted in the history of their franchise. They developed him for the last 10 years, and he became the centerpiece of their franchise as he led them to their first NBA Finals appearance in 2021. However, since then, the Suns haven’t come close to reaching the same spot.

Since 2021, the Suns have tinkered a lot with their team, bringing in Kevin Durant and Bradley Beal in consecutive seasons to try and form a big three and compete for an NBA championship. However, the salaries of all three players are so large that it has limited the Suns’ ability to build a strong roster around them.

And now, with the Suns struggling for form with a 28-32 record as they sit 11th in the Western Conference, their championship hopes are dwindling at breakneck speed. Most NBA executives believe they have little-to-no chance of finding playoff success this season. The Suns might have to acquiesce and look to rebuild. If they decide to do so, what teams should make a play for Devin Booker?

It’s hard to look past the Rockets, who are best placed to land him, as they have the Suns’ draft picks over the next few years. Sending Booker to the Rockets to get their picks back in a package that could look like this would allow them to commit to rebuilding and fixing their future.
