By now, everyone has seen the viral video of Will Smith hitting Chris Rock in the face during the Oscars. The incident has led Internet users to create a brand new meme format, which features Chris Rock recoiling right after Will Smith hits him.
NBA fans have submitted their best memes using the new meme format to Instagram page @buckets. There’s no doubt that some of these are hilarious, and they’re generally pretty straightforward with what they mean.
These memes clearly poke fun at happenings in the NBA and the wider basketball world. For example, the first meme in the post obviously points out that Russell Westbrook hits the backboard fairly frequently on his jumpers, as he is not a good jump shooter. Another meme also implies that plenty of March Madness brackets got ruined by 15th seeded Saint Peter’s University men’s basketball team. This meme format is clearly very versatile and usable for a variety of situations.
Aside from all the memes, there were also a lot of NBA players who reacted to the incident between Chris Rock and Will Smith. For example, Stephen Curry admitted that he was shocked after seeing Will Smith slap Chris Rock on live television.
This was loud!!! Like that slap on that other channel
Like everybody..I’m still in shock about the whole thing- but in all the unnecessary drama, at least we got the line of the night from Denzel…”In your highest moments, be careful, that’s when the devil comes for you!”
There is no doubt that all of the memes and the reactions can be humorous, but violence shouldn’t be condoned, even if some of the jokes that were cracked by Chris Rock can be perceived as offensive.
We’ll see what memes NBA fans can come up with using this format in the future. This is clearly something that people enjoyed doing, and perhaps we’ll see even funnier memes in the future.
