Gregg Popovich is well-known as one of the best coaches in the league, as well as of all time. He has won 5 championships with the San Antonio Spurs and has recently won a gold medal as the head coach of the 2020 USA men’s basketball team.

Recently, Gregg Popovich has achieved another milestone in his coaching career. The San Antonio Spurs won against the Utah Jazz today, and that means that Gregg Popovich now has the most coaching wins in NBA history, surpassing Don Nelson.

San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich has surpassed Don Nelson for the most coaching wins in NBA history.

There is no doubt that the San Antonio Spurs have not been as successful recently as in years past. However, they do have a good collection of young talent, such as Dejounte Murray and Keldon Johnson. There were some rumors that the San Antonio Spurs are preparing for Gregg Popovich’s retirement, but he has clearly been willing to stick around and try to help right the ship.

League sources say the #Spurs are preparing for Gregg Popovich’s retirement within the next 1-2 years. As he begins his 26th HC season, I’m told the organization has initiated an extensive search – both in-house and externally – into finding Pop’s replacement.

Gregg Popovich is the perfect head coach for a potential rebuild, as he has troves of basketball knowledge that he can impart to younger players. Hopefully, they are able to return to contention sooner rather than later, and perhaps we see Gregg Popovich lead his young squad to the play-in tournament.

The San Antonio Spurs are currently outside of the playoffs, and if they don’t end up making it, they could potentially draft a high-level prospect from the lottery this season. That will definitely make them a more competitive team, on top of their bright future already.
