Adrian Wojnarowski Says Klay Thompson Could Make Season Debut Against Cavaliers On January 9th

Klay Thompson has missed the two previous seasons and part of this season due to him being sidelined due to injury. However, it seems as though his return could come as early as this week.

Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN has recently revealed that Klay Thompson could make his season debut during the Warriors-Cavaliers game on January 9th. While there is no final decision yet, Wojnarowski reported that “barring a setback, there’s increased optimism” that his return will end up being on that date.

After a two-year layoff with significant injuries, there’s optimism that Golden State Warriors guard Klay Thompson will make his return against the Cleveland Cavaliers on Sunday, sources told ESPN.

A final decision on Thompson’s debut is expected to be made once the Warriors return from back-to-back games on Wednesday and Thursday in Dallas and New Orleans, sources said.

The Warriors and Thompson — a five-time All-Star and three-time NBA champion — had targeted two home dates in January (Sunday vs. Cleveland and Jan. 18 vs. Detroit), but barring a setback, there’s increased optimism that his return will come in Sunday’s game at the Chase Center, sources said.

Thompson, 31, is returning from a torn left ACL in Game 6 of the 2019 NBA Finals and a right Achilles tear in a November 2020 workout.

There were some reports previously stating that Klay Thompson could come back around Christmas time, but obviously, those have not come to fruition. At the end of the day though, it’s better to be safe than sorry, and it makes sense that the Warriors decided to play it safe and prioritize Klay Thompson’s health.

The Golden State Warriors already have the best record in the Western Conference, and Klay Thompson’s return should make them an even better team. The Warriors look like one of the favorites to win the championship, and we’ll see how good they will be when Thompson comes back.
