Coming off a championship win, the Golden State Warriors are under no pressure to make roster changes. With Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, Draymond Green, Andrew Wiggins, and Jordan Poole, the Dubs have a solid core that will keep them competitive for years to come.
But on Sunday, a familiar face joked about re-joining his former team with Warriors owner Joe Lacob, who recently appeared on an episode of the Point Forward podcast (with Evan Turner).
Lacob: “So, are you coming back next year?”
Iguodala: “Y’all want me to come back?”
Turner: “Dre says he wants $28 million!”
Lacob: “That he’s not getting, I can assure you…I gotta pay all these young guys, man!”
It was all jokes between Iggy and Lacob, but he wasn’t kidding about wanting the 1x Finals MVP back in a Warriors jersey next season.
“By the way, this guy didn’t play very much I’m looking at on my screen, Andre here. But I think you had a huge impact,” he said. “That does not go without notice. Huge impact. I watch you on the sidelines, I watch you in the locker room, and that was part of our strategy, too, to get you back.”
At 38 years old, Iguodala is well past his prime and likely won’t play more than 60 games for any team that he joins going forward.
Still, when he’s on the floor, the guy is productive at what he does. As a 3-and-D specialist, he fits the mold of the team and provides an essential spark for his teammates every time he’s on the floor. And when he’s not on the floor, he’s good as a leader and vocal motivator.
Now, at the tail end of his career, it makes almost too much sense for Iggy to go back to where it all started. In Golden State, he became a champion and solidified his place in the history books. He could do the same in one more run with Dub Nation…
