  • Team USA were the favorites going into the tournament
  • Austin Reaves also had the option of playing for Germany

In their most recent game of the FIBA World Cup, we saw Team USA lose to Germany, 111-113. There is no doubt that this was a disappointing loss for the team, as they were the much more talented squad. Now, the best they can finish is 3rd place, and that is only if they beat Canada.

Austin Reaves recently reflected on Team USA’s loss to Germany, noting that it was “super tough”. He did also state that he is happy for his former teammate, Dennis Schroder.

“Obviously super tough. We knew the task ahead and that was to win and we didn’t do that so you tip your hat.”

There is no doubt that this is a tough loss, and it is clear that Team USA might need to start sending more of their top-end talent if they are to get gold in future international tournaments. Though they had a lot of talent during this run, major superstars such as Stephen Curry and LeBron James did not suit up.

Austin Reaves had a solid run during the tournament however, averaging 12.4 points, 2.4 rebounds, and 2.6 assists per game, while shooting 52.4% from 3PT range. Hopefully, he can have an elite regular season in the NBA as well, and we’ll see what happens in the future.

Dennis Schroder Tried To Recruit Austin Reaves To Play For Germany

Austin Reaves may have suited up for Team USA this summer, but he also had the option of suiting up for the German national team. In fact, Dennis Schroder tried to recruit Reaves to join Germany all year long over Team USA.

“Dennis was obviously all year asking me about playing for the German team in the future, and I was open to it. Obviously, I told him straight up that I wasn’t going to play this summer because I wanted to rest and we had a long run, It was my first postseason run, and then the US opportunity presented itself.”

Ultimately, Austin Reaves made the right choice by joining Team USA, even with their recent loss to Germany. That offers him the best chance of winning Olympic gold in the future, and hopefully, he gets selected to the Olympic team at some point in his career.

Austin Reaves Has Gained A Lot Of Admirers During His FIBA World Cup Run

There is no doubt that many people have been impressed with the way Austin Reaves played in the FIBA World Cup. However, there are clearly some who believe that he has been overrated over the course of the tournament. That is not the opinion of respected analyst Stephen A. Smith however, with Smith’s honest response to whether Austin Reaves is overrated being a simple “no”.

At the end of the day, FIBA basketball doesn’t necessarily translate to the NBA. Austin Reaves will have to show that he can play at a high-level against the best of the best, but it is fair to say that he has the talent to have a long career in the league.
