Ben Simmons was once one of the best point guards in the league, capable of facilitating at a high level, slashing to the rim, and guarding five positions. There’s no doubt that he was an All-Star-caliber player during his time with the Philadelphia 76ers.
Thus far with the Brooklyn Nets, Ben Simmons has struggled overall, with him not looking like the same player he once was. However, recently, Ben Simmons has had a bounce-back performance for the team, putting up 15 points, 13 rebounds, and 7 assists against the Portland Trail Blazers.
During the game, Ben Simmons notably went 3-4 from the FT line. After the game, Ben Simmons was asked about getting sent to the line, with Simmons bluntly stating that he loves “those moments”, and isn’t going to “shy away” from going to the line.
For me I love those moments. I’m not going to shy away. That was their plan, obviously it didn’t work. We were able to convert a couple free throws, come back and get those stops… I like those moments.
It is good to see that Ben Simmons is displaying confidence when getting sent to the line. There have been many times when Ben Simmons has struggled from the line, with a number of people suggesting that he is scared of shooting free throws. Hopefully, his performances from the line continue to improve, and if Simmons continues to knock down his free throws, then he could potentially become a better scorer going forward.
Kevin Durant Liked Ben Simmons’ Performance Against Trail Blazers
Kevin Durant has recently praised Ben Simmons for making his free throws in crunch time, noting that this was “key” for the team while adding that Ben Simmons shot the free throws “like he’s confident”.
“I felt super confident when he went up there,” Durant said. “3-for-4, crunch time like that, that was key for us, we needed those. … He shot them like he’s confident and he ran back down court like he knew it was going in.”
It is clear that Ben Simmons has to perform well for the Brooklyn Nets to get far in the playoffs this year. His playmaking, rebounding, and defensive instincts will be extremely important once the playoffs come around.
When healthy, Ben Simmons seems to be the perfect player to complement Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving. Hopefully, the trio will find a way to coexist once they all get on the court, and they could make the Nets a dangerous team if things click for them.
