As the Philadelphia 76ers were enduring a brutal collapse against the Boston Celtics, the entire world bore witness as Joel Embiid and James Harden disappeared down the stretch in what became an ugly playoff blowout. Records were broken, legacies were altered, and even Ben Simmons got to have fun amid his former team’s downfall.

In a simple but powerful message on his Instagram, the disgraced former Sixer revealed that he was watching the whole thing unfold from his suite, and fans couldn’t help but laugh at how ridiculous it was.

Simmons has issues of his own, of course, but it makes sense why he’d enjoy watching his former teammates get demolished. Back when he was in Philly, he was an All-Star player before his team’s epic collapse against the Hawks in the 2021 playoffs. Ben was ridiculed, mocked, and blamed by fans and even some members of his team in that series, and by the end, he was painted as the scapegoat for the entire thing.

Looking back on it now, I can’t help but wonder if Ben was given too much blame for how his time with the Sixers went down.

Is Joel Embiid The Problem In Philly?

This year was supposed to be the one where Joel Embiid proved himself as not only a great regular-season player but also a true generational superstar who could lead his team to championships. At 29 years old, there’s still time for Joel to win a title, but he let another opportunity slip this season, and who knows when he’ll have a better chance than this.

“I think it was three things,” said Embiid after Game 6. “We had a lot of wide-open shots, we didn’t make them. We stopped moving the ball. I don’t think I touched the ball in the last 4 minutes of the game. We got some good looks, I didn’t touch the ball at all.”

Whatever excuse Embiid has this time, it won’t be enough to quell the storm of hate and criticism coming his way. But as the NBA MVP and a player with self-proclaimed superstar status, Embiid signed himself up for high expectations, and now he has to deal with the consequences of falling short of them.
